Preview: Feyenoord – Ajax (The Classic)

Sunday is at 2.30 pm; the classic. An excited Feyenoord receives a driven Ajax; guaranteed spectacle in the Kuip. The individual class of Ajax will defeat the fighting spirit of Feyenoord. Which means a new blow for departing trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Selection intact

Ajax had a turbulent resumption of the competition. In Amsterdam a 4-4 draw was played against sc Heerenveen. In the cup tournament, the Frisians were beaten last Thursday (3-1). Ajax did well out of the winter break in a personal sense. The club still has all the top players on board. Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech, David Neres and Dusan Tadic remain loyal to the club for at least another six months, despite great interest from the top clubs. Technical director Marc Overmars kept his leg stiff and only let defender Maximilian Wöber move to Seville for eleven million euros. A disappointment was the failure of Mexican top talent Diego Lainez who left for Betis Sevilla. Nevertheless, Ajax has enough offensive qualities to make it very difficult for Feyenoord and to put pressure on the static defenders of Rotterdam.

Top series thanks to De Jong

Ajax is working on a beautiful series of matches. Suffered throughout the football season
the team of trainer Erik ten Hag only one defeat, namely on September 23
against PSV (3-0). Ajax is still unbeaten in all other matches. An amazing series to which Ajax player Frenkie de Jong makes a huge contribution. The player is extremely ball-proof and has a very high fit accuracy on half of the opponent. No less than 90 percent of the passes that De Jong sends out on enemy half arrive at a teammate. That makes the new Barcelona acquisition by far the best passer of the Eredivisie. With his game he gives teammates the chance to play offensively.

Poor resumption

Feyenoord had a very poor continuation of the competition. Last week was
lost a chance with 1-3 at PEC Zwolle. The team of coach Giovanni van
Bronckhorst looked lax and restless. Especially defensive, it was poor with a back line that clearly falls short for this level. The cup victory last Wednesday against Fortuna Sittard (4-1) is just a patch on the wound. Van Bronckhorst will hope that his team will take to the field with the same game mentality as against PSV (2-1). In that competition the national champion was sniffed at on commitment, passion and struggle. These ingredients don't seem enough to Ajax and the team will have to rise above themselves to claim a result.
