Preview: FC Groningen – Ajax (Eredivisie 2018/2019)

After a historic victory last Tuesday against Juventus (1-2), and thus placement for the semifinals of the Champions League, Ajax's target must be back in the Eredivisie. A sold out Euroborg FC Groningen is waiting for Saturday evening. A difficult hurdle, but in this form Ajax is a towering favorite.

Youthful class

In Turin, Ajax mainly displayed masterly football after the break. With short combinations, quick outbreaks and a look ahead, the Amsterdam-based Juventus imposed the will. Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong showed why they are the top talents in Europe. The tranquility with which both players are in the field suggests that they already have a lot of experience with them. Nothing could be further from the truth, with 19 and 21 years respectively they are the youngsters of Ajax. Of the basic players, only Noussair Mazraoui is also under 22 years of age. On Saturday the young football players have to show that they are already so mature that they can also recharge against FC Groningen.

Attacking impulses

Of all the Eredivisie clubs, Ajax has by far the most goal attempts, namely 476. PSV (419) and Feyenoord (405) follow at an appropriate distance. The Erik ten Hag team scores 2.47 times per Eredivisie match. This makes a total of 106 goals, an unprecedented number. Certainly with the realization that there are still four games to be played. In the history of the Eredivisie there are only two teams that did better; in 1987/88 PSV with 117 goals and Ajax in 1997/98 with 112 goals. To break the record, the team from Amsterdam must score 12 times in four games, four goals per game. Assigners such as Dusan Tadic, David Neres, Hakim Ziych and Kasper Dolberg to shoot the assignment with a sharp shot.

In shape

FC Groningen started the season badly and was at the bottom of the rankings at the end of October. After the winter break, the team of Danny Buijs has retanched itself with eight wins in thirteen games. With this the Groningen players are now ninth on the ranking list and they even have a view of the play-offs for European football. Kaj Sierhuis has been loaned to Groningen by Ajax since the winter break and jointly responsible for the resurrection of his team. The center striker is technically skilled and makes his fellow players play better football. The task of Matthijs de Ligt is to eliminate his former teammate and to motivate Ajax as captain to also go to the extreme in the High North. In that case FC Groningen has no chance.
