After the exciting battle between two former European superpowers in Amsterdam, a new meeting between Benfica and Ajax is now on the roll. Two weeks ago Ajax ran away with the win in the extra time; three points to cherish. On Wednesday at 9 p.m., Ajax will be hunting for at least one point in Lisbon.
In the Johan Cruijff ArenA, it became clear that both teams do not differ much from each other. There was fighting for every centimeter and witnessed the seven yellow cards with the knife played between the teeth. Ajax, with 58 percent possession of the ball, was the team that largely dictated the match, but the chances were equally divided. The team from Amsterdam shot seventeen times on target, nine of them between the poles while the Portuguese with fourteen attempts had a hard time, but they forced Ajax keeper Onana only three times to a rescue. In Lisbon there will again be a fascinating battle and it comes down to the sharpness for the goal.
Nose for the goal
With Kasper Dolberg, Ajax has a real striker. The Dane was struggling with an injury for a long time, but since his return to the basic line-up he knows how to find it again easily. Back in the base and six league matches further, he is good for four goals. Last weekend against Willem II he proved his form by scoring from outside the 16-meter area. The sober player must prove to Benfica that he is freezing cold in a swirling Estádio da Luz. Two years ago, in the Europa League, Dolberg proved not to be so impressed with the ambiance, he scored in the stadiums of Olympique Lyon and FC Copenhagen, among others.
Benfica is working on a moderate series. The Portuguese lost the last two league matches; out against Belenenses (0-2) and at home Moreirense was 1-3 strong. The team of trainer Rui Vitória is in the Champions League with three points third in group E and must win from Ajax to have another chance at the knockout phase. In their own stadium, the team can do something extra from a European perspective and players like Pizzi, Rafa Silva and João Félix remain dangerous. Ajax has been warned and knows that taking a point to Amsterdam is a great result.
