Preview and odds: Slovakia – the Netherlands (practice international)

  width =

After the positive practice series in March in which narrowly was lost to England (0-1) and European champion Portugal was beaten by no less than 3-0, the next practice game for the Dutch national team is coming. Thursday at 8:45 pm Ronald Koeman's team will play host to Slovakia in Trnava.

No World Cup

The Dutch national team is in an intermediate phase. While the football world is counting down en masse towards the World Cup in Russia, the Orange League is all about the Nations League. In September and November, the Netherlands meets the superpowers France and Germany and hopes in this way to force placement for the European Championship in 2020. Four tickets are distributed through the Nations League, the remaining 20 countries can qualify through the regular qualifying tournament. For the coach, this is the ideal phase to sharpen a clear system, a clear game concept and logical automatisms. These investments must pay off in the autumn.

New striker

With the Dutch national team, all eyes are now on Memphis Depay. In addition to Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum, who played the Champions League final with their club, it was Depay who played the most striking season of all the Orange internationals. After the successful match against Portugal in which he was set up as an Orange striker, played well and scored once, his trainer at Olympique Lyon was over. Depay was put at the forefront at his club, resulting in beautiful figures. After meeting the European champion, the former PSV player managed to score ten times in nine duels. In total, Depay accounted for nineteen goals and thirteen assists in 36 games this season, impressive results for the new Orange forward.

More experience and confidence

Ronald Koeman's team appears confident and convincing in the preparation. The signs are therefore good. With no fewer than four Dutch players in the semifinals of the Champions League (in addition to the Liverpool players also Kevin Strootman and Arjen Robben), Dutch football has a say. In addition, the national coach seems to be hitting the right chord, as a result of which players are keen to take the team a step extra. In addition to self-confidence, history speaks to the Dutch advantage on Friday. The Netherlands and Slovakia had played each other twice before and both meetings were won by the Dutch national team. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa it became 2-1 and in the last meeting from 2012 Slovakia was a prey for the Orange with 2-0. Such a result is now also obvious.
