At least 22 of the 31 provinces and municipalities that are allowed to sell lottery tickets achieved revenue growth in May. Only the province of Guangdong saw its turnover fall by 4.3 percent, despite the success of the past month. According to the Ministry of Finance, Guangdong's total lottery sales amounted to around $ 555 million.
Suspension of online lottery sales
Beijing imposed a temporary suspension of online lottery sales around 20 months ago. According to analysts, the sales of lottery ticket sales will be even greater if this temporary suspension is lifted. However, Beijing has not yet formally indicated when this suspension would be lifted. Market research firm Technavio expects annual sales growth of 4.53% of the Chinese online lottery market between now and 2020.
Total sales of official lottery products increased by 8.9 percent in May to about 5.5 billion dollars. The lottery sale in itself, however, was 1.4 percent lower than April. From January to May 2017, total lottery product sales in mainland China increased by 6.8 percent to around $ 25 billion. The sports lottery led the sale, with a growth of 19.8 percent to 2.9 billion dollars. The ministry announces that the total current lottery sales from January to May 2017 amounted to 12.9 billion dollars, while the sale of sports lotteries was nearly 12 billion.
