The partnership between Uber and MGM Resorts costs porters and other staff a lot of tips. In addition, an unsafe climate is created by the Uber drivers, as many porters report anonymously on 4 August 2017.
Uber in Las Vegas
Where Uber may not be used in some countries or has even withdrawn completely, Uber is widely used in Las Vegas. It is the ideal means of transport in the gambling city, where the distances are often just too long to walk and a taxi is often expensive.
Transport service from third parties
This also applies to the MGM Grand Resort where there is even a partnership between MGM and Uber. For example, porters are expected to assist guests upon arrival of guests with their own transport, taxi and a third-party transport service with which the hotel has a partnership. From a survey by the union, many porters have now complained about the Uber drivers, all anonymous.
The porters and other assisting staff indicate that the gratuity income has fallen considerably through the use of Uber. Reception staff and other hotel staff very often recommend the use of Uber. The porters disagree. The consequence of this is that less use is made of taxis and limo services. When using these services, the porters receive the most tips.
Reduced safety and working environment
The porters also indicate that the security for the entrance is being compromised. Uber drivers are in direct contact with the end customer and generally pay much less attention to the traffic rules that apply at the entrance to the MGM Grand Resort.
Problem for all hotels in Las Vegas
"It is a problem for all hotels in Las Vegas," said a union spokesperson. The MGM Grand Resort & Casino indicated that it was investigating, but had no further substantive comments on the matter.
