FC Emmen – PSV (Eredivisie 2018/2019)

After a long winter break, eighteen of the Eredivisie play is coming. On Sunday at 2.30 p.m. leader PSV will take on FC Emmen on the ground in Drenthe. The PhD student will do everything in his power to stop the list leader, but this is a hopeless mission in advance.

Talents in Qatar

PSV had a great training camp in the desert. In Qatar it completed many training sessions and the atmosphere was great. The team from Eindhoven played one exhibition game against Club Brugge and won 2-1. In it, sixteen-year-old Mohammed Ihattaren scored, who, along with the talents Yorbe Vertessen (17) and Zakaria Aboukhlal (18), was allowed to join the training camp. Trainer Mark van Bommel has faith in the youth and does not hesitate to let the talents make Eredivisie minutes. Mauro Júnior (19), Michal Sadílek (19) and Dante Rigo (20), for example, played their role in the first half of the competition. The largest teenage talent, Donyell Malen (19), played seventeen games and scored four times. A true revelation.

Mutual struggle

The battle in midfield between Érick Gutiérrez and Gastón Pereiro continues unabated. In the last three games before the winter break, the Mexican summer purchase was preferred to Pereiro. In Qatar, Van Bommel again chose Gutiérrez against Club Brugge, so the 23-year-old player seems to get another chance in the coming games. However, it will not be an easy decision for the coach as five-time Uruguayan international Pereiro accounted for eight goals in sixteen games in the first half of the season. Those are neat figures for an attacking midfielder. The mutual struggle ensures a healthy competition and makes the team stronger.

Weak attack

FC Emmen had a good first half of the season. With four wins, five draws and eight losses, the team is in the middle of the thirteenth. The Dick Lukkien team mainly takes its points in away matches. On average, the team achieved 0.67 points in home games, while 1.38 points were taken away in away games. The people from Drenthe only scored nineteen goals in the first seventeen games; only FC Groningen, PEC Zwolle and De Graafschap are doing worse. In the winter break Emmen therefore reinforced himself with striker Michael de Leeuw. The attacker came over from Chicago Fire for which he played 57 league games in three seasons and scored twelve times. No figures for which the PSV defense is awake, but De Leeuw may be surprised. On Sunday Emmen will be happy if it stays with a small defeat but a big Eindhoven victory seems inescapable.
