Champions League participation good for annual PSV turnover

While Ajax won the league title last season and reached the semi-final of the Champions League, PSV did not have any real success. With 83 points the championship was not within reach (where it is sometimes enough), the Johan Cruijff scale went to Rotterdam after penalties and in the Champions League the Eindhoven players were already out of the tournament after the group stage. In fact, at the European level they did not win a single match 🙁 In the KNVB Cup, RKC is the Van Bommel team too strong in the second round, so PSV is left empty-handed at the end of the season. not?

Dramatic season 2018-2019 for PSV

They started out so promisingly, the people of Eindhoven. "Philips" may have lost to Feyenoord in the battle for the Johan Cruijff scale, but after 17 games it stands at 16 times a win, a great starting position for the winter break. Also at the start of the season they manage to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, after beating the tough White Russians of BATE Borisov in the play-off with one more goal goal. It is the first season of PSV under Mark van Bommel as head coach. He could hardly have wished for a better start. But then … In the Champions League, the players from Eindhoven won both the Barcelona of the golden duo Piqúe and Messi, as well as Tottenham and Inter Milan. A big draw, and that appears to be the case when PSV only collects 2 points from six games. No win and only two draws, PSV is out of European football before the winter break. Excelsior is beaten in the KNVB cup and everyone expects that RKC should not cause any problems either. But the B-team of Van Bommel seemed stronger and scored already in the first minute, it suddenly came out in the extension. But there is still hope. The first rounds in the Eredivisie are PSV strong and win ao 4-0 from Utrecht, 6-1 from Willem II and 7-0 from ADO. With Ajax aiming its arrows at Europe since they brilliantly survived the preliminary rounds, it seems almost a given that PSV will at least be the national champion.

After the winter break

Nobody knows what happened during the winter break, but afterwards PSV is just a shadow of itself. The only possibility for winning a prize, the national title, is on the way after the umpteenth draw and Ajax knows how to maintain itself in both the Eredivisie and in Europe. At the beginning of April, the people of Amsterdam took over the lead from the farmers from Eindhoven and managed to keep it for the rest of the season. Ajax is the national champion, 3 points ahead of PSV that has to settle for a second place. So it is not for the people of Eindhoven, last season.PSV - EindhovenSupporters of the PSV in Eindhoven experienced, especially after the winter break, no good season in 2018-2019

PSV's annual report

PSV's financial year runs parallel to a football season: from 1 July to 30 June. The fact that PSV was not allowed to take any prize to the Philips Stadium this year does not mean that the club is not doing well financially. On the contrary, it achieved the highest result in 10 years and achieved a positive result for the 8th time in a row. And that is because they have reached the group stage in the Champions League! Some figures: the turnover amounted to more than 96 million euros, which is 34 million more than a year earlier. They raised around € 18 million from the Champions League, but it also brought them other commercial activities that also increased sales by 10%. Of the 96 million, after deduction of operating costs, € 12 million remained, this is the gross result. The operational costs do not include transfer fees. At the start of the 2018-2019 season, PSV bought Angeliño (who left for Manchester City after one season), Denzel Dumfries and Érick Gutiérrez. In the summer of 2018 they sold Santiago Arias and Joshua Brenet. These transfers together produced a negative result of more than 4.5 million euros. At the end of the season, this was somewhat offset by the departure of De Jong and Angeliño, although the question remains whether these were booked for 2018-2019 or a year later. The amounts are not broken down. The transfer from Lozano, which brings € 40 million to PSV, will in any case fall in the new financial year. The purchase of Bruma is still in the old. PSV paid more than 1.2 million euros in interest last year. The repayment of interest-bearing debts should reduce this in the coming years. Finally, taxes still have to be paid, over € 1.6 million. The net operating result then amounts to € 4,636,000. Compared with a year earlier, that is 4.5 million more (at the time, the result was only € 160,000).Champions League participation good for annual PSV turnover 1Max Pixel

What can we expect in the coming season?

The Executive Board is satisfied with Mark van Bommel, as we read in PSV's annual report. He did well in his debut year. He had to deal with a very young selection and that is just very difficult. With, among other things, attracting Afellay and Bruma, there needs to be more team. The results so far (mid-October) are not that bad either. The Johan Cruijff Scale has been won by Ajax (because Ajax won both the cup and the national title, they competed against the number 2 of the Eredivisie) but that was not a big surprise. After a draw in and against Twente and at home against Ajax, PSV has so far managed to win all matches, sometimes with resounding figures. So there is no loss on the clock in the battle for the championship. Yet they are second, only on the goal balance. So this can still be fine. Who is first? Ajax just continues where the last year ended …

Europa League

In Europe, PSV was eliminated by Basel in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. This purely on goal balance (it will not be the year of the wrong goal balance for PSV?). They were allowed to advance to the third qualifying round of the Europa League, after which a win from FK Haugesund was enough to go on to the play-offs. PSV was far too strong for Apollon Limasol with 3-0 and 0-4, so they are playing European football again, only one level lower. Whether that's so bad? For the current PSV, it might be better not to want to compete with the largest and strongest clubs in Europe. That the Europa League is better is clear when PSV is undefeated after 2 matches in the group stage and is currently first in the group (against Sporting Lisbon, LASK and Rosenburg). By making it to the group stage, they will in any case receive almost € 3 million in starting premium. They also receive an amount from the coefficient ranking, how much is not yet known (the website with the ranking is flat at the time of writing). Every victory in the group phase is worth € 570,000, so PSV has already received more than 1.1 million, which can increase even further in the coming period. The further the club gets, the more they can earn in prize money (for performance) and television money. The prize money in the Europa League is not nearly as big as in the Champions League. But if they come to an end, it can easily bring them back 10 to 20 million. If they win, this amount is even a bit higher, all together. And that would be nice for this year's annual accounts!

PSV betting

At the Toto they have confidence in the European adventure of PSV. With an odd of 1.35 they see PSV as the group winner of group D, before Sporting Lisbon (3.45) and LASK (11.75). Rosenburg has already been written off with 90.0. They also dare to predict the final result, but whether it should make us happy. PSV is 7th with odds of 23.00. Also international bookmakers do not see it happen: PSV is the eighth listed with odds between 29.00 and 34.00. After the group stage they would compete against teams like Arsenal and Manchester United. And we also understand that somewhere. Nationally, the Toto thinks that Ajax will once again be the national champion (1.46). The Eindhoven players follow with 2.37 but then drop a big gap: Vitesse and AZ are the next in the list with odds of 35.00. So that it goes between the two superpowers seems to be done.
