In the Netherlands we are still busy discussing the legalization and regularization of online gambling. In our neighboring country they are already a lot further. Online gambling has been legalized there and everything is already regulated, but a new gambling law will soon be proposed. This law is much stricter than the law that is currently being applied, the first law about online gambling. You can read more about the new law that will be introduced in Belgium in the short term on this page today, 20 February 2018.
Online gambling bill leaked out
The fact that we now know that there is a new legislative proposal is because this proposal has been leaked. The leaked bill shows that online casinos in Belgium may in the short term be allowed to advertise less and have fewer bonuses on their products. The various online casinos are also no longer allowed to accept credit cards and similar payment methods.
However, these are not the most radical legislative changes. The biggest change in the Gaming Act is that the residents of Belgium are given a limit for online gambling. According to this limit, they can deposit a maximum of 500 euros per week into their account to gamble online. If you want to spend more on a gambling site, then you must be able to prove that you earn enough. In this case you must also be able to prove that there are no payment arrears or debts. If you cannot prove this, then the limit remains.
Fighters against online gambling win the battle
In Belgium there are various parties against online gambling. This includes the National Lottery, but also addiction experts and social organizations. They argue that legalizing online gambling causes many new gambling addicts, but also inappropriate gambling advertisements. Although in the beginning not many people listened to the parties who were against online gambling, this is now something else. The law for online gambling in Belgium is being made stricter. The government therefore seems to be listening to the opponents of online casinos.
The new law: a bad Belgian joke?
Many parties are in favor of a stricter law for online gambling, critics call the law a bad Belgian joke. They fear that the tightening of the Gaming Act will push players towards the illegal gambling offer. This offer has decreased since the legalization of online gambling, but is still present. It remains to be seen whether this will really be the case. It is not yet known when the new law will be implemented.
