Everyone knows the gambling cities of Las Vegas in the United States and Macau in China. A lesser known gambling town is the small town of Myawwady. You can find this city at the Thai border, in Kayin State.
If you walk through Myawwady during the day, you will not realize that it is a real gambling city. Only when all the shops close in the evening and the residents of the city are inside, do the large casinos in the city stand out. This is where the residents and tourists in the city flock en masse, when the rest of the city is asleep.
From business people to heavy gamblers
The casinos in Myawwady are visited by hundreds of people every night. Not only heavy gamblers come to the casinos: business people from home and abroad also like to come there. They make big deals in the casino, while taking a gamble in the meantime. You don't just come in by the way. Before you go to one of the casinos, you are well checked by the security guards. Not everyone is welcome in the crowded casinos of Myawwady.
More crime by the casinos
Heavy gamblers, business people and curious tourists are happy with the many casinos in Myawwady, but the locals are less enthusiastic. They see that the crime in the city has increased considerably and blame this on the arrival of the various casinos in the city. Since the development of Myawwady into a real gambling city, there have been more burglaries, robberies, pickpockets and even murders in the city.
They want a large part of the casinos – and perhaps even all of them – to close their doors. The chance is small that this will happen. The local government earns a lot of money with the enthusiastic gamblers. This money is used to repay loans from other countries. Perhaps the legislation will be amended slightly to “please” the locals, but the chance that Myawwady remains a gambling city is high.
